Why do a Village Appraisal??

There are as many reasons for doing an appraisal as there are villages doing them.

Most commonly an appraisal is carried out in response to a particular issue which exists, such as traffic congestion, a need for local housing, or radical changes to the village. It provides the opportunity for a Parish Council to gain an understanding of the views of the whole village,        and not just a vocal minority, and it offers guidance on the future development of the village.

An increasing number of Parish Councils are seeing appraisals as a way to canvas local opinion prior to the updating of local plans - thus allowing them to respond confidently to consultation.

Text Box: It identifies areas of concern within the community and highlights what needs to be improved or conserved.

Text Box: It improves success in funding applications by providing evidence of community involvement in local projects.

Text Box: It provides the basis for a Parish or Town Plan (PTP) as recommended in the Rural White Paper

Text Box: It enables local priorities to be fed into the community planning process and become part of the District Community Strategy.
Text Box: It enables the parish council to fulfil the consult element of the ‘Spirit of Best Value’ and become ‘Quality Parishes’.
