Ingelrica, the wife of Ranulf peveral founded St Mary Magdalene here in the reign of William II. Ingelrica was the daughter of a noble Saxon. Before she was married she was the mistress of William the Conqueror. During the reign of Henry I, Ingelrica's son William peveral converted the foundations into a Benedictine priory as part of the abbey in St Albans. After the dissolution of the monasteries, a modern house set in 100 acres was built in 1775 and was called The Priory. It was owned by the Mariannhill Mission.

There is a legend in Hatfield Peverel of a ghostly dog. The dog 'Shaens Shaggy Dog' has reputedly haunted the house of the Shaens for two centuries. It is a seemingly quiet dog until it is attacked. The story states that a driver, with his cart and two horses attacked the dog with his whip when they were reduced to smoking ashes.
