Neighbourhood Watch

The effort being expended by Braintree District Council in pursuing a robust Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) scheme throughout the Braintree district is increasing. This is being led by Clive Stewart who works for Essex Police, and the local NHW coordinators. Clive is based at Braintree Police station.

The Hatfield Peverel Parish Council has embraced the scheme and is actively working to increase the coverage throughout the Parish. New NHW street signs have been erected in areas where a new scheme has been established.

The aims of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme are as follows:

  1. To reduce local opportunities for crime by deterring would be thieves and vandals
  2. To establish a community spirit so that everyone can contribute to the protection of their property by mutual co operation and communication
  3. To inform the police or the local NHW Coordinator of any suspicious activity
  4. To make everyone more aware of local crime problems and more security conscious about their own homes.

Bogus Callers

Most people who call at your home will be genuine, but sometimes people turn up unannounced, with the intention of tricking their way into people’s homes. They are known as ‘distraction burglars’ or ‘bogus callers’ whose only aim is to get into homes to distract people and steal their money or valuables. You should always be cautious when someone you don’t know calls at your home.

Bogus callers may be smartly dressed and claim to be from the council, the police, health organisations or gas, water or electricity companies. They can be convincing and persuasive. If you are expecting a caller always check their identification very carefully before letting them in; if you are in any doubt DON’T let them in, and if necessary call the police. If you require further information please contact your local NHW coordinator.

Message in a bottle

This is a voluntary emergency information scheme intended for use by any person whilst living at home. The scheme provides the Emergency Services with vital details of any illness or allergy you may suffer from, medication you may be taking and the name of a person to be contacted in the event of you suffering a sudden illness or personal accident.

Your details are stored in a plastic container, which is kept in the fridge. Two special stickers known to the Emergency Services and other caring agencies are put up inside your home- one on the outside of your fridge door and the other on a wall or panel inside your front door. If you require a container please contact your Local NHW coordinator. The containers are free, and your NHW coordinator will be only too pleased to show you how to complete the details required.

Finally it is the responsibility of us all to report crime, vandalism or anti social behaviour if we see it - that it may not affect us is dodging the issue. The police can only start to tackle what is reported to them. Together we can ensure that our village continues to be a safe and pleasant environment to live in.
